Women’s Health

Cervical Smears

When you receive notification that you are due for a smear test, you should contact reception and book a cervical smear appointment with the practice nurse.

You will be informed of the result by a letter sent to you by the Cervical Screening Service (not from the surgery). Results are currently available about 2 weeks after the sample is taken. The Surgery will also receive notification of the result at about the same time.

Mammograms

You may be between 47-53 years old when you receive your first appointment. This is simply due to the way the programme is administered, but often causes women to be concerned that they have been “missed”.

If you believe you are overdue an appointment, or have other queries about the service, you can ring The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital (who administer the screening programme) on 0161 291 4444.

If you are within the screening age range but have not received an appointment, you can contact the service by telephoning the above telephone number.

Following screening, women should receive the result by post in about 3 weeks.

Asthma Review

Appointments can be booked via 0161 271 3130

All Asthma Patients will be offered a 20 minute appointment for their initial assessment. During this appointment they will receive inhaler technique assessment and training so it is essential that all inhalers, spacers etc are brought to this appointment. A 20 minute appointment will then be offered for each follow up review.

Once the patient is established with inhaler / medication for asthma a Personalised Asthma Action Plan and Self-Management resources with be provided to enable self-management of symptoms. Patients / carers will be reminded to bring all inhaled medication to every appointment.

The practice aims to build up an excellent partnership between clinical staff and asthma patients and encourage them to attend their appointments and educate them about the seriousness of their condition and the consequences that may occur if their asthma is not managed correctly.

It is very important that patients with asthma attend for a review even if they are well as this gives us the best opportunity to see how they are when their chest is at its best. This will then enable the clinician to compile a tailor-made self-management plan for the best outcome.

Patients with asthma are added to an Asthma Register and will be automatically invited for review every 3 to 12 months depending on age and symptom control. It is important if anyone experiences any problems that they book an appointment with the Practice Nurse or the GP as soon as possible and do not wait to be invited.
